Types of Writing

Here are the types of writing:

Expository

A form of writing that explains, informs, and describes a topic. Expository writing is usually written when someone needs to teach or explain something to a person. Everyone needs to learn Expository Writing as it can help you develop essentials skills for clarifying confused brains on what they are learning/developing. Students will start developing Expository Writing in Grade 9.


Some examples of expository writing are:​

  • Textbooks

  • Informative Articles

  • Bibliography

  • News Reports

  • Essays

  • Instruction Manuals

  • How to Guides

Now, here are some ways to write effectively in Expository Writing:​

  • Define the Topic - Defining the topic could help you know what subject to inform and explain to your person.​​

  • Organize the Content - Organizing the structure of your writing can help develop a strong display and a better lexicon for your reader.

  • Use Reliable Sources - It is better to use reliable sources as some of them may not be trustable to use. Make sure the source is safe and easy to use! 

  • Revise for Clarity - Make sure to always revise your work for improvements to fix your mistakes; rereading it is strongly recommended. Otherwise, your writing may not be as perfect as you think it is.​​

Descriptive

A type of writing that forms an image by describing topics using vivid sensory details. Descriptive writing is used when someone needs descriptions on an item/book/character/food/etc. We use descriptive writing because it helps people visualize topics just by using words that are expressive. You will start using descriptive writing in Grade 9.

Some examples of Descriptive writing include:
 

  • Nature Writing​

  • Food Reviews

  • Character Descriptions

  • Travel Writing

  • Descriptive Article​

Here are some ways to write effectively in Descriptive writing:​

​

  • Orient the reader​ - Make sure every detail is oriented so that the reader understands what you are saying.

  • Use vivid adjectives and adverbs - Using strong specific words helps you give your readers a better image of what you are talking about.

  • Incorporate sensory details - Using sensory writing can depict a locus in the readers mind allowing it to emprise what you are thinking.

  • Enhance vivid imagery​ - Create paintings with words to capture the properties so that you can expand your mind with vivid descriptions.

  • Use figurative language - Using literacy elements like metaphor, simile, personifications and hyperbole, you can create texts with a descriptive calm sensation/emotions that can help you in creating a more dynamic, evocative picture in your writing.

Narrative

A type of writing where a person tells a story by writing in a book/novel. Narrative writings engages the reader through the plot, rising action, conflict, falling action, and resolution of the story. Narrative writing helps people generate ideas for stories they want to write and tell them without any problem. 


Examples of Narrative writing include:  
 

  • Novels

  • Books​

  • Poems

  • Fiction writing

  • Non-fiction writing

Now, here are some ways to write effectively in Narrative writing:

Start with a bang - Always start your story with a bang so that your readers get curious

Sculpt your characters - Make your characters relate to your audience so that they get attached to your characters.

Follow a structured approach - Organize your story structure with a clear plot, conflict, and resolution.

Practice regularly - Make sure to practice regularly with your structure and your writing, reading regularly and taking notes can help you develop important skills to master your knowledge.

Persuasive

A type of writing that persuas people to follow whatever they believe/are doing. Persuasive writing is a way to get people to follow you or their group by applying the skills that is learned. 

Examples of persuasive writing include: 
 

  • Advertisements

  • Food reviews

  • Food menus

  • Political campaigns

  • Persuasive speeches

Now, here are some ways to write effectively in persuasive writing:​

  • Establish Ethos​ - Demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

  • Use logos - Present reasonable arguments and evidence to support your claims.

  • Appeal to pathos -  Get to know your reader's emotions for a more personal connection.

  • Be transparent - Acknowledge the things that you dont know so that you can use that to build your argument with an effective blow.
